The primary goal of this system is to provide consumers with standardized information about tire performance characteristics, allowing for more informed purchasing decisions. This standardized labeling allows for easier comparison between different tire models from various manufacturers.

The most common tire labeling system in many regions, including Europe, is based on a rating scale that covers three key performance areas: fuel efficiency, wet grip, and external rolling noise. Fuel efficiency is rated on a scale from A (best) to G (worst), indicating how much fuel a vehicle consumes with a particular tire. Wet grip, a measure of how well a tire performs in wet conditions, is also rated from A (shortest braking distance) to G (longest braking distance). External rolling noise is indicated by a sound wave symbol, with one wave representing the quietest tires and three waves representing the noisiest.

In addition to these primary ratings, some labeling systems also include information about snow grip and ice grip for tires intended for winter conditions. These additional markings help consumers select appropriate tires for their specific climate and driving needs. The development and implementation of these labeling systems aim to improve road safety, reduce fuel consumption, and minimize environmental impact through quieter tires.
