Relieftulostuksen, also known as relief printing, is an ancient printing technique where the image or text is produced by applying ink to a raised surface. The printing plate, often made of wood, linoleum, or metal, is carved or etched to remove the areas that should not print, leaving the image elements in relief. Ink is then rolled onto these raised areas. When paper or another substrate is pressed against the inked surface, the ink transfers to create the printed image.

Historically, woodblock printing, a form of relieftulostuksen, was widely used in East Asia for centuries before its introduction to Europe. In Europe, woodcuts became a significant medium for book illustration and artistic expression during the Renaissance. Later developments included linocuts, which use linoleum as the printing material, offering a softer and more easily workable surface than wood. Metal relief printing techniques, such as electrotyping and stereotype, were also developed to create durable printing plates for mass production.

The characteristic appearance of relieftulostuksen often includes strong contrasts and a somewhat coarse texture due to the nature of the raised printing surface. This method is still practiced today by artists and printmakers for its unique aesthetic qualities and its historical significance.
