Reititystekniikat, also known as routing techniques, are methods and algorithms used to determine the path that data packets will take across a network. In computer networking, a router examines the destination address of a packet and consults its routing table to decide where to forward the packet next. This process is essential for the efficient and reliable delivery of information across interconnected networks, such as the internet.

There are broadly two categories of routing techniques: static and dynamic. Static routing involves manually configuring the routes in a router's routing table. These routes remain fixed unless manually changed, making them suitable for small, stable networks where changes are infrequent. Dynamic routing, on the other hand, uses routing protocols to automatically learn and update routes. Protocols like RIP (Routing Information Protocol), OSPF (Open Shortest Path First), and BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) allow routers to exchange routing information with each other, adapting to changes in network topology and link status.

Dynamic routing protocols can be further classified as distance-vector or link-state. Distance-vector protocols, such as RIP, calculate the best path based on the distance (hop count) and vector (direction) to the destination. Link-state protocols, like OSPF, build a complete map of the network topology and then use an algorithm, such as Dijkstra's, to calculate the shortest path from each router to every other router. The choice of routing technique depends on factors like network size, complexity, scalability requirements, and the need for fault tolerance.
