Regurgitációja refers to the act of bringing partially digested food or liquid back up from the stomach into the esophagus and sometimes out of the mouth. This is a physiological process that occurs in many animals, particularly infants and young children, as a normal part of digestion. In infants, it is often a result of an immature digestive system, where the muscles between the esophagus and stomach are not yet fully developed, allowing contents to flow backward.

Unlike vomiting, which is a forceful expulsion of stomach contents due to an involuntary reflex, regurgitation is typically passive and effortless. There is usually no nausea or retching associated with regurgitation. It can occur during or after feeding and is often attributed to overfeeding, lying down too soon after eating, or certain feeding positions.

While common and usually harmless in healthy infants, persistent or excessive regurgitation can sometimes indicate an underlying medical condition such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Symptoms of GERD that might warrant medical attention include poor weight gain, irritability, arching of the back during or after feeding, or respiratory problems. In adults, regurgitation can be a symptom of various conditions affecting the esophagus or stomach, including motility disorders, strictures, or hiatal hernias. Treatment for regurgitation depends on its cause, with many infant cases resolving on their own as the digestive system matures.
