Regjion is a term used in Albanian and in various contexts to denote a region—an area distinguished from surrounding places by geography, governance, culture, or economics. In practice, the concept of a regjion appears in geography, urban and regional planning, statistics, and discussions of cultural identity.

Regions can be official administrative units created by governments to organize services, infrastructure, and development policy. They can also be cultural or historical areas defined by shared language, heritage, or traditions. In addition, regions may be defined for economic or ecological purposes, such as zones with integrated markets, similar industry profiles, or common natural features. The classification into administrative, cultural, or functional regions often depends on the policy goals and institutional arrangements of a country or organization.

The term is closely related to the broader linguistic family of regional terms, stemming from Latin regionem and seen in many European languages as region, région, or similar forms. In Albanian usage, regjion functions as a general noun for any defined area and appears in official documents, media, and academic writing to describe one of the above types of region.

Governance and formal status vary by country. Some states designate regions as official administrative subdivisions with elected or appointed authorities and jurisdiction over certain competences. Others use regions primarily for planning or statistical purposes, without independent governance. International practices often rely on standardized regional classifications for analysis and comparison, such as the European Union’s regional frameworks or other continental statistical schemes.

In public discourse, regions are discussed in terms of demographic trends, economic development, infrastructure, governance, and cultural distinctiveness.
