Regionalnätet, or the regional network, is the portion of an electrical grid that connects the high-voltage transmission network to local distribution networks and end users within a defined geographic region. It sits between the transmission system and the consumer-facing distribution networks, handling the delivery of electricity over intermediate voltage levels.

Typically operated at medium voltage levels (for example 20–130 kV in many systems) and managed by distribution system operators or regional utilities, regionalnätet handles the delivery of electricity from substations to consumers and larger customer facilities. It includes substations, switching stations, transformers, feeders, and protection and control equipment. Its operations include reliability maintenance, fault isolation, load balancing, and coordination with the transmission system operator to ensure system stability.

Regulation and governance usually involve a national or regional energy regulator and grid codes that specify connection requirements, tariffs, and reliability standards. Ownership may be public, private, or a mix, depending on the country and market structure. In many systems, regionalnätet is operated by regional distribution companies or cooperatives, with clear interfaces to the national transmission grid (stamnät) and to local distribution networks.

Modernization efforts focus on digitalization and grid automation, including SCADA, remote fault detection, digital metering, and the integration of distributed generation, electric vehicle charging, and demand response. Key challenges include aging infrastructure, investment needs, cyber-physical security, and ensuring resilience against extreme weather while supporting the transition to renewable energy and new technologies. Regionalnätet thus plays a central role in reliable electricity delivery and regional planning.
