A refectory is a dining hall, particularly in monasteries, seminaries, and religious institutions. The term derives from the Latin word "refectorium," meaning a place for refreshment. Historically, refectories were central to the communal life of these institutions, serving as the primary location for meals.

These halls were often large and well-proportioned, designed to accommodate a number of residents eating together. Architectural features could vary significantly depending on the era and the wealth of the institution, but common elements included long tables, benches, and often a raised platform or pulpit from which a lector would read religious texts or other edifying material during meals. This practice of reading aloud during meals was intended to encourage spiritual reflection and learning even during a basic necessity.

In some monastic traditions, silence was observed during meals, with communication facilitated by the reading. In others, conversation was permitted. The design and arrangement of the refectory could thus reflect specific monastic rules and customs. While the term is most strongly associated with religious settings, similar large dining halls in other communal living environments, such as schools or colleges, might also be referred to as refectories. Today, many historical refectories are preserved as architectural heritage sites or have been adapted for other uses.
