Reduções, from the Portuguese term for “reductions,” refers to organized settlements established in the 17th and 18th centuries by Jesuit missionaries and Portuguese colonial authorities to gather Indigenous populations into centralized communities. The most prominent focus was among the Guaraní and related peoples in the borderlands of present-day Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, and Bolivia. The aim was to Christianize and bureaucratically manage Indigenous communities, while offering protection from slave raids and enabling coordinated labor for mission economies.

A typical reduction featured a central church and plaza, with houses, schools, workshops, and agricultural facilities organized around the main square. Indigenous residents lived under the supervision of missionaries and colonial authorities, but maintained some traditional leadership structures within a Christianized framework. The reduções were designed to be self-contained, providing education, religious instruction, agriculture, and crafts, and they played a key role in broader colonial strategies of settlement, taxation, and border control.

Historically, reductions were part of the Jesuit mission system in the region and were influenced by both religious and political objectives. They faced resistance and pressure from rival colonial groups and were vulnerable to conflicts, disease, and slave raids. The Society of Jesus was suppressed in 1767, and many reduções were secularized, abandoned, or reorganized under secular authorities.

Today, the reduções are studied for their cultural and historical significance in the Guaraní world and the history of colonial South America. Notable examples include missions in present-day Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Bolivia, some now recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites as part of the Jesuit Missions of the Guaranis.
