Redoxtonen is a term used in theoretical discussions of redox chemistry to denote a hypothetical redox-active species or class of species capable of rapid, reversible exchange of electrons between distinct oxidation states. In these discussions, redoxtonen is envisioned as an electron reservoir that can buffer or shuttle electrons within a system, similar to a redox mediator or a battery electrolyte, but imagined as a single molecular framework that stabilizes multiple oxidation states.

Conceptually, models of redoxtonen describe a central scaffold that can stabilize two primary redox states, with an energy landscape that allows a low-lying, rapidly interconverting region between them. Depending on the model, the framework may be treated with closed-shell or open-shell representations. The defining features are tunable redox potentials, high electron-transfer rates, and stability in both oxidation states, enabling fast and reversible redox cycling under suitable conditions.

The term is not widely used in experimental literature and tends to appear mainly in theoretical, pedagogical, or fictional contexts. There is no universally agreed chemical identity for redoxtonen, and it remains a conceptual construct rather than a confirmed compound. In teaching and thought experiments, researchers may illustrate redoxtonen with model systems such as quinone-like scaffolds, metal–ligand complexes, or other tunable redox-active frameworks to demonstrate principles of redox buffering and electron transfer.
