Realtidsbegränsningar, often translated as real-time constraints, refer to the timing requirements that a system must satisfy to function correctly. These constraints define when a specific task or computation must be completed relative to a particular event or a deadline. In essence, a real-time system is defined by its temporal behavior as much as its functional behavior.

There are generally two main categories of real-time constraints: hard real-time and soft real-time. In hard real-time systems, missing a deadline can lead to catastrophic failure or severe consequences. Examples include flight control systems, anti-lock braking systems in cars, and medical devices like pacemakers. In these systems, the correctness of the entire system depends on meeting all deadlines.

Soft real-time systems, on the other hand, can tolerate occasional deadline misses. While performance might degrade if deadlines are missed, the system does not necessarily fail completely. Examples include streaming media services, online gaming, and financial trading platforms. In these cases, missing a deadline might result in a dropped frame, a slightly delayed update, or a less optimal transaction, but the system as a whole continues to operate.

The design and analysis of real-time systems involve techniques to guarantee that these constraints are met. This often includes scheduling algorithms, resource management, and careful system architecture to ensure predictability and timely execution of tasks. Understanding and adhering to real-time constraints is fundamental in the development of many critical and performance-sensitive applications.
