Razini, also known as Razin, was a 17th-century leader of the Don Cossacks, a group of Russian peasants who had settled in the Don region of the Lower Don River. Born around 1630, Razin's early life is shrouded in mystery, but he is believed to have been a serf who rose to prominence through his military prowess and charismatic leadership.

Razin's career as a military leader began in the 1660s, when he led a rebellion against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which had occupied the Don region since the 17th century. His forces, known as the Razin Band, were composed of a mix of Cossacks, peasants, and other disaffected groups. Razin's most notable campaign was his invasion of Poland in 1666, which ended in a decisive defeat at the Battle of Chudnov.

Despite his military failures, Razin's reputation as a leader and warrior grew, and he became a symbol of resistance against foreign occupation. His band grew in size and influence, and he even managed to capture the city of Azov in 1670, briefly establishing a Cossack state in the region.

However, Razin's reign of terror and brutal methods of governance eventually led to his downfall. In 1671, a coalition of Polish, Ukrainian, and Russian forces launched a campaign against the Razin Band. After a series of battles, Razin was killed in a skirmish near the town of Starocherkasskaya. His death marked the end of his rebellion and the dissolution of his band.

Razin's legacy is complex and controversial. While he is often remembered as a folk hero and symbol of resistance, his methods of governance and his brutal treatment of his enemies have also led to criticism. His story continues to be a subject of interest for historians and scholars, who seek to understand the motivations and actions of this enigmatic figure.
