Raudreduktsioon, also known as iron reduction, is a chemical process involving the reduction of iron-containing compounds, typically iron oxides, to elemental iron. This is a fundamental process in metallurgy and is crucial for the production of iron and steel.

The most common method of raudreduktsioon is the blast furnace process. In a blast furnace, iron ore, coke (a form of carbon), and flux (like limestone) are heated to very high temperatures. The coke acts as both a fuel and a reducing agent, reacting with the oxygen in the iron ore to produce molten iron. The chemical reactions involve the carbon reducing iron oxides, such as Fe2O3, to FeO, and then further to metallic iron. Limestone decomposes to calcium oxide, which reacts with impurities in the ore to form slag, a molten waste product that can be separated from the iron.

Other methods of iron reduction exist, including direct reduction processes. These processes bypass the blast furnace and typically use gaseous reducing agents like carbon monoxide or hydrogen, or solid reducing agents like coal, under specific temperature and pressure conditions. Direct reduction is often used to produce direct reduced iron (DRI), which is then used in electric arc furnaces for steelmaking.
