Rasteriaineistoihin, often translated as raster data or raster imagery, refers to a type of geospatial data that represents the world as a grid of cells, also known as pixels. Each cell in the grid has a specific location and contains a value that represents a characteristic of that location. This value can be anything from a color to an elevation measurement or a land cover classification.

Raster data is commonly used to represent continuous phenomena, such as elevation, temperature, or rainfall, where values change gradually across space. It is also widely used for satellite imagery and aerial photographs, where each pixel corresponds to a small area on the ground and its value represents the light reflected or emitted from that area. The resolution of raster data, which is the size of each cell, determines the level of detail in the representation. Higher resolution means smaller cells and thus a more detailed image, but also a larger file size.

Common file formats for raster data include GeoTIFF, JPEG2000, and ERDAS IMAGINE. Software like Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are essential tools for viewing, analyzing, and manipulating raster datasets. Unlike vector data, which represents geographic features as points, lines, and polygons, raster data is often processed using image processing techniques. Its ability to represent continuous surfaces and its direct compatibility with remotely sensed imagery make it a fundamental component of many geospatial applications, including environmental monitoring, urban planning, and natural resource management.
