The word combines rask (fast/rapid) with metaller (metals) and is used to describe metals that exhibit rapid chemical changes under certain conditions or that react quickly in practical applications.

In usage, raskmetalle can refer to highly reactive metals that interact swiftly with air, water, or other reactants. The most well-known examples are alkali and alkaline earth metals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, which can react vigorously or even explosively with water or moisture. The label can also be applied, more loosely, to metals that show particularly rapid redox behavior or catalytic activity in specific environments, though this is not a widely adopted technical classification.

Because of their high reactivity, raskmetaller pose handling and storage challenges. They are typically kept away from moisture and air, sometimes stored under mineral oil or in inert atmospheres, and transported with precautions to prevent accidental ignition or reaction. Safety data for such materials emphasizes appropriate personal protective equipment, ventilation, and emergency response measures for fires and chemical burns.

The term raskmetalle is largely informal and context-dependent. In serious technical writing, more precise terms such as "reaktive metaller" (reactive metals), "alkaliske metaller," or specific descriptors for redox behavior are preferred. Nevertheless, the concept highlights the importance of reactivity and handling considerations for metals that can undergo rapid chemical change.
