Rantaympäristö, or the shore environment, refers to the zone around bodies of water where land and aquatic systems interact. The term is used for coastal, lake and riverine settings and denotes the ecological area where hydrological, geological and biological processes connect land and water. The genitive form rantaympäristön is used to talk about the shore environment of a particular place or feature.

These transitional zones are shaped by gradients of moisture, salinity (in brackish areas), sediment supply, and disturbance regimes such as wave action or flood pulses. They include beaches, dunes, wetlands, riverbanks, estuaries and riparian forests. The movement of sediment, erosion and deposition, and nutrient exchange between water and land drive productivity and habitat structure.

They are exposed to pollution, nutrient runoff, habitat fragmentation, invasive species, shoreline stabilization structures, and overuse. Historical alteration, such as channelization or coastal defenses, can reduce natural dynamics and biodiversity.

Effective management combines land-use planning, habitat restoration, and protection of key habitats. Strategies include riparian buffers, soft engineering, restoration of dunes and wetlands, and integrated coastal or river basin management. Monitoring and adaptive approaches help respond to climate change impacts.
