Rahvamuusika is the traditional music of the Estonian people, encompassing melodies, songs, and dances that have been passed down through generations. It includes vocal and instrumental repertoire used in everyday life, work, celebrations, weddings, harvests, and seasonal rituals. The music is largely learned by listening and imitation rather than through formal notation, though later collection and transcription have helped preserve it.

A central element of rahvamuusika is the runo song, known as regilaul, an ancient vocal tradition characterized by alliteration and parallel phrasing. These songs often appear in epic or ritual contexts and are performed by solo singers, small ensembles, or with a chorus. Instrumentally, traditional ensembles commonly feature the kannel, a wooden zither; the torupill, a bagpipe; fiddles; and various wind and reed instruments. Over time, the repertoire expanded to include the accordion and other Western instruments, especially in urban and revival contexts.

Historically, rahvamuusika developed within rural communities and served social and ceremonial functions. A revival in the 19th and early 20th centuries, connected to national awakening, helped safeguard many tunes and songs. Institutions such as large-scale song festivals and folklorist collecting projects played a key role in preserving and propagating this heritage.

In the contemporary era, rahvamuusika remains a living tradition. It is studied by folklorists, performed by specialized folk ensembles, and influences modern Estonian music through fusion with other genres and world music. The tradition continues to contribute to national identity and cultural heritage, while preserving regional variants and ceremonial repertoires for future generations.
