Radionavigation refers to the use of radio waves to determine position, course, or location. This technology plays a crucial role in aviation, maritime, and land-based transportation, as well as in surveying and scientific research. The fundamental principle involves receiving radio signals transmitted from known locations and using the timing or frequency differences of these signals to calculate a receiver's position.

Early forms of radionavigation included systems like LORAN (Long Range Navigation), which used ground-based radio transmitters. Aircraft and ships would receive signals from multiple synchronized transmitters, and the difference in arrival times allowed for hyperbolic position fixing. Another significant system was VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range), primarily used in aviation, which provides directional information to aircraft relative to a ground station.

The most prevalent and globally utilized radionavigation system today is the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), with the United States' GPS (Global Positioning System) being the most widely known. Other GNSS include Russia's GLONASS, Europe's Galileo, and China's BeiDou. These systems consist of a constellation of satellites orbiting Earth, each broadcasting precise timing and orbital data. A receiver on the ground processes signals from at least four satellites to calculate its three-dimensional position (latitude, longitude, and altitude) and precise time.

The accuracy and reliability of radionavigation systems can be influenced by various factors, including atmospheric conditions, signal multipath (reflections), and intentional or unintentional interference. Modern receivers often employ sophisticated algorithms and corrections, such as differential GPS (DGPS), to enhance accuracy. Radionavigation technology continues to evolve, with ongoing advancements aimed at improving precision, availability, and resilience.
