Radikulaarne is a term used in medicine, particularly in neurology and physical therapy, to describe conditions that affect the nerve roots of the spinal cord. These nerve roots are part of the peripheral nervous system and emerge from the spinal cord to connect with the rest of the body. When these roots become compressed, inflamed, or irritated, it can lead to a variety of symptoms.

The most common cause of radikulaarne conditions is a herniated or bulging disc in the spine. As the disc material presses on the adjacent nerve root, it can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that radiates along the path of that nerve. This is often referred to as sciatica when the affected nerve is in the lower back, but radikulaarne pain can occur in the neck (cervical radiculopathy) or mid-back (thoracic radiculopathy) as well. Other causes include spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, bone spurs, and injuries to the spine.

Symptoms of radikulaarne conditions vary depending on which nerve root is affected and the severity of the compression or irritation. Pain is often the most prominent symptom, described as sharp, burning, or aching. It can be localized to the spine or radiate into the limbs. Sensory changes like numbness or tingling, and motor deficits such as muscle weakness or loss of reflexes, are also common. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, neurological tests, and imaging studies like X-rays, MRI, or CT scans. Treatment approaches can include conservative measures like rest, physical therapy, pain medication, and injections, or in some cases, surgical intervention.
