Radiationattenuating refers to the ability of a material or barrier to reduce the intensity of ionizing radiation as it passes through. Attenuation occurs through absorption and scattering interactions between radiation and the atoms in the shielding material, and is often described by I = I0 e^(−μx), where μ is the linear attenuation coefficient and x is the thickness. The related mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ) combines μ with material density to compare shielding performance across substances. Common measures include the attenuation coefficient, the mass attenuation coefficient, and the half-thickness (half-value layer), the thickness required to reduce the incident intensity by half.

Different forms of radiation interact with matter in distinct ways. Photons in the X-ray and gamma-ray range are attenuated primarily by photoelectric absorption, Compton scattering, and, at higher energies, pair production. Attenuation increases with material density and atomic number, so high-Z materials like lead are widely used for shielding against photons, while concrete and earth are common in building facilities. Neutrons require different strategies, often involving slowing mechanisms (moderation) with light elements and capture with boron, cadmium, or gadolinium-containing materials. Charged particles such as alpha and beta particles have limited ranges and are best shielded by relatively thin, inexpensive materials, with greater thickness needed for higher energies.

Applications of radiation-attenuating materials include medical imaging rooms, radiotherapy shielding, nuclear power and research facilities, industrial radiography, and spacecraft protection. Attenuation also underpins imaging techniques, where differing tissue attenuation creates contrast. Design trade-offs involve weight, cost, and potential for secondary radiation, requiring careful optimization for safety and performance.
