Radial deviation is a term used across disciplines to describe displacement or error measured along a radial direction from a chosen center or axis. In its general sense, it refers to how far a point, feature, or measurement lies from an ideal radial position.

In geometry and engineering, radial deviation often appears when a profile or surface is described in polar coordinates (r, θ). If a nominal radius is r0 for a given angle, the radial deviation δr is the difference δr = r − r0. This quantity expresses radial error or tolerance and is used to assess how closely a manufactured part or a recorded contour matches its intended circular form. Radial deviation is related to, but distinct from, other tolerances such as concentricity and runout.

In engineering practice, radial deviation is commonly discussed alongside radial runout, which describes the variation of a rotating element’s surface relative to a reference circle as it spins. In medicine, radial deviation has a distinct meaning related to joint movement. For example, radial deviation of the wrist refers to bending the hand toward the thumb side, contrasted with ulnar deviation toward the little finger side. This usage is descriptive of movement rather than a geometric error measure.

Measurement of radial deviation employs tools such as calipers, dial gauges, laser scanners, or angular/position sensors, often by comparing against a reference radius or axis. Understanding radial deviation supports quality control, anatomical description, and kinematic analysis across fields.
