Radarreflecties refer to the signals that are sent back to a radar system after they have interacted with an object. Radar, an acronym for Radio Detection and Ranging, emits radio waves or microwaves which travel outwards. When these waves encounter an object, some of the energy is reflected back towards the radar's receiver. The characteristics of this reflected signal, known as the echo or return, provide valuable information about the object.

The strength of the radarreflectie is influenced by several factors. The size and shape of the target are significant; larger objects generally produce stronger reflections. The material composition of the object also plays a role, with conductive materials like metal reflecting radar waves more effectively than non-conductive materials. The surface texture of the object matters too; rough surfaces tend to scatter radar waves in multiple directions, while smooth, flat surfaces can cause specular reflection, where the waves bounce off predictably.

The time it takes for the radar wave to travel to the object and return to the receiver is used to determine the distance to the object. By analyzing the Doppler shift of the returning waves, the radar can also ascertain the object's velocity. Radarreflecties are fundamental to how radar systems operate, enabling applications such as air traffic control, weather forecasting, navigation, and military surveillance.
