Radarreflectie is a fundamental concept in radar technology, describing how radar signals interact with objects and return to the radar receiver. When a radar pulse is transmitted, it travels outwards and encounters targets such as aircraft, ships, or weather formations. A portion of the energy from this transmitted pulse is reflected back towards the radar antenna. The strength, timing, and characteristics of this reflected signal, known as the radar echo, provide crucial information about the target.

The amount of energy reflected depends on several factors, including the target's size, shape, material composition, and orientation relative to the radar. Smooth, metallic surfaces, for instance, can reflect radar waves more efficiently than rough, non-metallic ones. The radar cross-section (RCS) is a quantitative measure of how detectable an object is by radar, essentially representing its effective reflecting area. A larger RCS generally means a stronger echo.

The time it takes for the radar pulse to travel to the target and return to the receiver is used to determine the target's range or distance. By measuring the time difference between transmission and reception, and knowing the speed of electromagnetic waves (the speed of light), the distance can be precisely calculated. Doppler radar utilizes the frequency shift of the reflected signal to determine the target's radial velocity – whether it is moving towards or away from the radar. This phenomenon, the Doppler effect, is analogous to the change in pitch of a siren as it passes by.
