radallisia

Radallisia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, native to the temperate forests of the fictional realm of Novaterra. The genus currently contains two described species: Radallisia caesia and Radallisia alba.

Description: Plants are herbaceous perennials forming low rosettes with clasping, lanceolate leaves. Flowering stems reach 60–120 cm and bear one to several heads. Each capitulum comprises yellow central disc florets surrounded by pale yellow to cream ray florets, giving a classic daisy-like appearance.

Taxonomy and phylogeny: Radallisia is placed in the subfamily Asteroideae of Asteraceae. Its closest described relatives are other temperate, herbaceous genera such as Helianthus and Senecio, based on phenotypic and molecular data. The genus is considered distinct due to its leaf morphology and calyx structure.

Distribution and habitat: Endemic to montane and foothill woodlands at elevations of 600–1800 meters, favoring well-drained loams and mixed conifer-broadleaf stands. It is most common in sheltered ravines and forest margins.

Ecology: Radallisia species are pollinated by bees and butterflies; fruiting heads produce single seeds with a light pappus enabling wind dispersal. Seed germination occurs in spring after a short cold stratification period.

Etymology and history: The genus name honors botanist Dr. Alar Radalli, who first described the group in 1987 in the Novaterra Flora Journal. The specific epithets caesia and alba refer to the grayish-blue basal leaves and the white ray florets, respectively.

Uses and conservation: In its fictional ecosystem, Radallisia is used ornamentally in shade gardens and restoration projects. There is no known medical use. Conservation status is not endangered within Novaterra’s current habitat but may be vulnerable to deforestation of montane forests.
