The basic principle involves an X-ray tube that generates X-rays, which then pass through the patient's body. Different tissues absorb X-rays to varying degrees. Denser tissues, like bone, absorb more X-rays and appear lighter on the resulting image, while softer tissues allow more X-rays to pass through and appear darker.

The apparatus typically consists of an X-ray tube, a power source, and a control panel. The X-ray tube contains a filament that is heated to produce electrons. These electrons are then accelerated towards a target material, usually tungsten, at high speed. The rapid deceleration of electrons upon striking the target generates X-rays. The intensity and energy of the X-rays can be adjusted by the operator via the control panel, allowing for tailored imaging protocols depending on the area of the body being examined and the desired image quality. The generated X-rays are directed through a collimator, which shapes the beam, and then through the patient. The X-rays that emerge from the patient are captured by an imaging system, which can be film-based or, more commonly today, a digital detector that converts the X-ray signal into a digital image displayed on a monitor. Regular maintenance and calibration are crucial to ensure the safe and effective operation of röntgensapparaten.
