Quinsy, medically known as peritonsillar abscess, is a collection of pus that forms near the tonsils, typically as a complication of tonsillitis or other throat infections. It usually occurs in the peritonsillar space, the area around the tonsils, leading to swelling and inflammation. Quinsy most commonly affects adolescents and young adults, but it can occur at any age.

The primary symptoms of quinsy include severe sore throat, especially on one side, difficulty swallowing, pain that may radiate to the ear, and a muffled or "hot potato" voice. Patients might also experience fever, chills, and swelling of the neck. In some cases, there may be trismus, or difficulty opening the mouth, and a deviated uvula towards the unaffected side.

Diagnosis is primarily clinical, based on symptoms and physical examination. Imaging studies, such as ultrasound or CT scans, may be used to confirm the presence of an abscess. Laboratory tests can assist in identifying underlying infections.

Treatment generally involves drainage of the abscess, which can be performed through needle aspiration or incision and drainage. Antibiotics are administered to treat the associated infection, typically targeting common bacteria such as Streptococcus pyogenes or Staphylococcus aureus. Analgesics and supportive care, including hydration and rest, are also important.

Complications from untreated quinsy can include airway obstruction, spread of infection to surrounding tissues, or sepsis. Prompt medical intervention is essential to prevent these outcomes. In recurrent cases, tonsillectomy may be considered.
