A quad-turbo system refers to an internal combustion engine equipped with four turbochargers. This setup is significantly more complex than a twin-turbo or single-turbo arrangement and is typically found in high-performance or specialized engines. The primary goal of employing multiple turbochargers is to optimize engine performance across a wider range of revolutions per minute (RPM).

In a quad-turbo system, the turbochargers can be configured in various ways. One common approach is sequential turbocharging, where smaller turbochargers spool up quickly at lower engine speeds, providing immediate throttle response and reducing turbo lag. As engine RPMs increase, larger turbochargers, or a combination of all four, come into play to provide maximum boost and power output at higher speeds. Another configuration might involve parallel turbocharging, where the turbos are identical and each serves a bank of cylinders, often seen in V-configured engines.

The complexity of a quad-turbo system requires sophisticated engine management electronics to control boost pressure, fuel delivery, and ignition timing to prevent engine damage and ensure optimal efficiency. While offering the potential for significant power gains and improved drivability, the increased number of components also leads to higher manufacturing costs, greater weight, and increased maintenance requirements. Consequently, quad-turbo setups are rare and typically reserved for exotic sports cars, racing engines, or heavy-duty industrial applications where extreme power and precise control are paramount.
