Põletusjaamad, also known as incineration plants or waste-to-energy plants, are facilities designed to generate energy, typically electricity, by burning combustible waste materials. These plants play a significant role in waste management by reducing the volume of landfill waste and simultaneously producing a usable energy source.

The process usually begins with the reception and sorting of waste to remove non-combustible materials or items that could harm the combustion process. The remaining waste is then fed into a furnace where it is incinerated at high temperatures. This combustion process generates heat, which is used to produce steam. The high-pressure steam then drives turbines connected to generators, producing electricity.

Modern põletusjaamad incorporate advanced emission control technologies to minimize the release of pollutants into the atmosphere. These technologies include scrubbers, filters, and catalytic converters to capture harmful gases and particulate matter. The ash produced from the combustion process is often treated and can be used as a secondary material in construction or disposed of in controlled landfills.

The energy generated by these plants can contribute to a region's energy supply, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. However, concerns are sometimes raised regarding the environmental impact, particularly the emissions and the management of residual ash.
