Põhjaveeni, often translated as "groundwater vein" or "subsurface water vein," refers to a concept in Estonian folklore and sometimes in contemporary local beliefs regarding underground water flows. These are not scientifically recognized hydrological features but rather are associated with traditional knowledge about the earth and its hidden resources.

In folk traditions, põhjaveeni were believed to be channels of flowing water deep beneath the surface. Their presence was thought to influence the fertility of the land and the availability of well water. Finding a põhjaveeni was considered important for locating a good spot for digging a well, as it promised a reliable and plentiful water source. The quality and perceived characteristics of the water from a põhjaveeni could also vary, sometimes associated with healing properties or, conversely, with stagnant or unhealthy water depending on local beliefs.

The concept often overlaps with dowsing or water-witching practices, where individuals with a perceived sensitivity could supposedly detect these underground water flows using tools like divining rods. While modern hydrology explains groundwater movement through aquifers and hydrogeological principles, the idea of põhjaveeni persists in some rural areas as part of a connection to older, nature-based wisdom.
