Päänsärö, commonly known as a headache, is a prevalent condition characterized by pain in any region of the head. Headaches can vary greatly in intensity, frequency, and duration, and their causes are diverse. They are broadly categorized into primary headaches, which are not caused by another underlying medical condition, and secondary headaches, which are symptoms of another illness or injury.

Primary headaches include tension-type headaches, the most common form, often described as a dull, constant ache around the head. Migraine is another common primary headache, typically characterized by throbbing pain, often on one side of the head, and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Diagnosis of headaches usually involves a review of the patient's medical history, a physical examination, and sometimes imaging tests like CT scans or MRIs if a secondary cause is suspected. Treatment strategies depend on the type and cause of the headache and can range from over-the-counter pain relievers and lifestyle modifications to prescription medications and, in some cases, specific treatments for underlying conditions. While most headaches are not indicative of serious illness, persistent or severe headaches warrant medical attention to ensure proper diagnosis and management.
