Päälaakerit, often translated as main bearings, are critical components in internal combustion engines. They are responsible for supporting the crankshaft and allowing it to rotate smoothly within the engine block. A typical engine will have several main bearings, strategically placed along the length of the crankshaft.

The primary function of a main bearing is to reduce friction between the rotating crankshaft and the stationary engine block. This is achieved through a thin film of lubricating oil that separates the metal surfaces. The bearing itself typically consists of a two-part shell, made from a durable metal alloy, which houses the crankshaft journal. These shells are precision-machined to exacting tolerances.

When an engine is running, the crankshaft spins at high speeds, generating significant forces. The main bearings must withstand these forces and maintain the crankshaft's position accurately. Wear on main bearings can lead to increased clearances, which results in knocking or rattling noises, reduced oil pressure, and ultimately, catastrophic engine failure if not addressed. Regular maintenance, including oil changes and filter replacements, is essential for prolonging the life of main bearings.
