Päiväntasaajaa refers to the Earth's equator in Finnish. It is an imaginary line drawn around the Earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. The equator is the line of 0 degrees latitude.

The Earth's circumference at the equator is approximately 40,075 kilometers (24,901 miles). Due to the Earth's rotation, the equator bulges slightly, making it the widest part of the planet. The equatorial regions experience very little seasonal variation in temperature, with relatively consistent daylight hours throughout the year, typically around 12 hours each day.

Several countries lie along the equator, including Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, São Tomé and Príncipe, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Indonesia, and Kiribati. The term "equator" itself comes from the Latin word "aequator," meaning "equalizer."

The length of a day at the equator is almost exactly 12 hours, regardless of the season. Sunrises and sunsets at the equator are generally quite rapid. The concept of the equator is fundamental in geography, cartography, and navigation for establishing location and understanding global climate patterns.
