A párásítót, or parasite, is an organism that lives in or on another organism, known as the host, and derives nourishment and other benefits at the host's expense. Parasites can be found in nearly every ecosystem and can infect a wide range of hosts, including animals, plants, and even other microorganisms. They play a significant role in ecological systems, influencing population dynamics and biodiversity.

Parasites exhibit diverse life cycles and modes of transmission. Some, like tapeworms and flukes, have complex life cycles involving multiple hosts, while others, such as fleas or ticks, rely on a single host. Transmission can occur through direct contact, contaminated food or water, or vectors like mosquitoes or ticks. Parasitic infections, or parasitoses, can cause a range of symptoms depending on the type of parasite and the host’s immune response. In severe cases, they may lead to chronic illness or death.

Parasites are classified into three main groups based on their relationship with the host: ectoparasites, which live on the surface of the host (e.g., lice or leeches), endoparasites, which live inside the host (e.g., roundworms or malaria-causing plasmodium), and hyperparasites, which infect other parasites. Some parasites, like myxomatosis virus in rabbits, can even be used in biological control to manage pest populations.

Control and prevention of parasitic infections involve hygiene practices, such as proper food handling and sanitation, as well as medical treatments like antiparasitic drugs. Public health efforts often focus on education, vector control, and surveillance to reduce the spread of parasitic diseases. Understanding parasites and their behavior is essential for both ecological balance and human health.
