Puthur is a name used for several settlements in southern India, primarily in the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The most prominent ones are a village in Kannur district of Kerala and a village in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. The name derives from the Malayalam and Tamil word “puthur”, meaning “new place”, and it has been applied to communities founded during the medieval period.

Puthur in Kannur district lies on the western coast, close to the Arabian Sea, and is connected by State Highway 59. According to the 2011 census it had a population of about 7,500. The local economy is dominated by rubber cultivation, coconut farming, and small‑scale horticulture. The village contains several temples and hosts an annual Meenavarathal festival that draws visitors from neighbouring areas.

Puthur in Tamil Nadu is situated on the Cauvery delta near the Bay of Bengal. Agriculture and fishing form the backbone of its economy, with paddy fields and fishponds common in the landscape. The official language is Tamil, and the community holds the annual Puthur Pongal festival. Local governance is carried out through a village panchayat, and the settlement is characterized by a mix of rural livelihoods and modest commercial activity.

There are also lesser–known hamlets named Puthur in Andhra Pradesh’s Annamayya district and other parts of Kerala, which share similar agricultural profiles and traditional festivals. The various Puthur settlements are generally small, non‑urban centers and are distinguished by their local customs, languages, and economic activities.
