Pupillatágítás, also known as mydriasis, is the dilation of the pupil, the opening in the center of the iris that controls the amount of light entering the eye. This process can occur naturally in response to low light conditions, allowing more light to reach the retina for better vision in dim environments. It can also be induced artificially through the use of specific eye drops.

Mydriatic eye drops work by relaxing the iris sphincter muscle, which constricts the pupil, and/or stimulating the iris dilator muscle, which widens the pupil. These drops are commonly used in ophthalmology for several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. During eye examinations, pupil dilation allows doctors to get a clear view of the internal structures of the eye, such as the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels. This is crucial for detecting and monitoring various eye conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.

In some cases, pupil dilation can also be used therapeutically. For instance, it may be employed after certain eye surgeries to prevent adhesions from forming between the iris and the lens, or to reduce eye pain associated with conditions like uveitis. The effects of mydriatic eye drops are temporary, with pupil size typically returning to normal within a few hours to a day, depending on the specific medication used. Common side effects can include temporary blurred vision and increased sensitivity to light, often requiring the use of sunglasses.
