Puntfundering is a foundational engineering technique used to transfer building loads to deeper, more stable soil layers. It is particularly employed when the upper soil strata are too weak or compressible to adequately support the structure. The term "puntfundering" translates from Dutch to "point foundation," highlighting its characteristic design.

The core principle of puntfundering involves individual foundation elements, often referred to as piles or piers, that are driven or bored into the ground until they reach a load-bearing stratum. This stratum is typically bedrock or a dense, compact soil layer. The load of the building is then transmitted through these elements, bypassing the weaker upper soils.

Puntfundering can be implemented in various forms. Driven piles are pre-fabricated elements, usually made of concrete, steel, or timber, that are hammered into the ground. Bored piles, on the other hand, are created by drilling a hole and then filling it with concrete, often with reinforcing steel. The diameter and length of these elements are determined by the expected loads and the subsurface soil conditions.

The design and installation of puntfundering require careful geotechnical investigation to identify suitable bearing layers and to calculate the required pile capacity. Incorrectly designed or installed puntfundering can lead to settlement issues and structural damage.
