A Punktmass, also known as a point mass or particle, is a fundamental concept in physics. It represents an idealized object with no spatial extent, meaning it has zero volume and occupies no space. Despite its lack of physical size, a point mass possesses all of its mass concentrated at a single geometric point. This simplification is incredibly useful in physics for analyzing the motion of objects when their size and shape are irrelevant to the problem at hand, or when considering their behavior from a distance.

The concept of a point mass allows physicists to simplify complex calculations. For instance, when studying the trajectory of a planet around a star, the planet and star can be treated as point masses. This ignores the fact that planets and stars are large, rotating bodies, but it accurately describes their orbital motion due to gravity. Similarly, when analyzing the collision of two billiard balls, their individual sizes might be secondary to their mass and velocity in determining the outcome of the collision.

The motion of a point mass is described by its position, velocity, and acceleration, all of which can be represented as vectors originating from that single point. Its interaction with forces results in changes to its momentum. The concept is a cornerstone of classical mechanics, enabling the development of laws such as Newton's laws of motion and universal gravitation in their most basic and widely applicable forms. While real objects always have finite size, the point mass approximation is a powerful tool that makes many physical phenomena mathematically tractable.
