Puncture tests are mechanical tests that measure a material’s resistance to puncturing by a sharp object. They are used to assess the strength and durability of items such as packaging films, textiles, foams, polymers, and protective equipment. The test typically determines either the force required to cause a through-puncture or the energy absorbed up to puncture.

In a puncture test, a sample is prepared and secured, and a pointed indenter is driven into the material at a controlled rate using a universal testing machine, a drop-weight device, or a pendulum apparatus. The indenter geometry can vary and may be conical, needle-like, spherical, or another shape specified for the test. During the test, force and displacement are recorded, producing a load–displacement curve. The puncture metric is usually the peak puncture force, the penetration displacement, or the puncture energy (the area under the curve up to puncture). Test conditions, including sample thickness, backing support, orientation, temperature, and humidity, significantly influence results.

Standards from organizations such as ASTM and ISO describe common test configurations, indenter shapes, speeds, and reporting requirements, though specific procedures differ by material and application. Results must be reported with detailed conditioning, sample preparation, test speed, indenter geometry, backing, and thickness to ensure comparability. Limitations include sensitivity to material anisotropy, flaws, and edge effects, which can affect reproducibility.
