Pulping methods are industrial processes used to separate cellulose fibers from lignin and other non-cellulosic components in woody and non-woody raw materials. This separation is essential for producing paper, paperboard, and other fiber-based products. The primary goal of pulping is to break down the plant material into individual fibers that can then be reformed into a sheet.

There are two main categories of pulping methods: mechanical and chemical. Mechanical pulping involves grinding wood chips or other raw materials, often with water, to physically separate the fibers. This method retains most of the wood's components, including lignin, resulting in higher yields. However, the presence of lignin can lead to weaker paper with a tendency to yellow over time. Examples include groundwood pulping and refiner mechanical pulping.

Chemical pulping, on the other hand, uses chemicals to dissolve the lignin and other binding agents, freeing the cellulose fibers. This process produces stronger, brighter, and more durable paper because the lignin is largely removed. Chemical pulping generally has lower yields than mechanical pulping. The most common chemical pulping process is the Kraft process, which uses a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide. Other chemical methods include the sulfite process.

Hybrid or semi-chemical pulping methods combine aspects of both mechanical and chemical processes. They often involve a mild chemical pre-treatment to soften the material before mechanical refining. This approach aims to achieve a balance between yield, fiber quality, and production cost. The choice of pulping method depends on the desired properties of the final product, the type of raw material available, and economic considerations.
