Pulmonologisk is an adjective used primarily in Nordic medical languages to denote relation to pulmonology, the medical specialty that studies the lungs and the respiratory tract. The term covers both clinical practice and scientific research focused on lung function, diseases, and rehabilitation.

The scope includes disorders of the airways, lung parenchyma, pleura, and surrounding structures, with emphasis on gas exchange, ventilation, and disease prevention. Common conditions managed by pulmonologists include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, lung cancer, interstitial lung diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, and sleep-related breathing disorders like obstructive sleep apnea. Pediatric pulmonology is a recognized subspecialty.

Diagnosis typically combines history and physical examination with tests such as spirometry, DLCO, chest imaging (X-ray and CT), arterial blood gas analysis, bronchoscopy, and sometimes sleep studies or thoracic ultrasound.

Treatment integrates pharmacotherapy (bronchodilators, inhaled corticosteroids, antibiotics when indicated), nonpharmacologic measures (smoking cessation, vaccination, pulmonary rehabilitation), and supportive care including oxygen therapy or ventilatory support. Interventional pulmonology and thoracic surgery may be employed for selected conditions such as tumors or complex airway disorders.

Education and training place pulmonology as a distinct medical specialty in many countries, with multidisciplinary teams involving radiology, pathology, critical care, and rehabilitation to manage acute and chronic respiratory disease.
