puller

Puller is a term used for a device or a person involved in applying a pulling force. In mechanical maintenance and manufacturing, the word most often designates tools used to remove parts that are pressed onto shafts or into hubs. The two common categories are bearing pullers and gear or pulley pullers. A bearing puller typically has arms that grip the inner race and a central screw that, when tightened, drives against the shaft to draw the bearing off. Gear and pulley pullers use two or three jaws that grip the part and pull it away from the shaft as the central screw is advanced. Some pullers are hydraulic or pneumatic, providing greater force with controlled operation. Correct use requires proper jaw fit, alignment, and lubrication to prevent damage to parts or the puller itself.
