Pufferi refers to a type of fish belonging to the family Tetraodontidae, commonly known as pufferfish, blowfish, or globe-fish. These fish are characterized by their ability to inflate their bodies into a ball shape when threatened, a defense mechanism that makes them difficult for predators to swallow. This inflation is achieved by rapidly ingesting water or air into their expandable stomachs.

Tetraodontidae comprises over 200 species, found in tropical and subtropical ocean waters worldwide, though some species inhabit brackish or freshwater. Many pufferfish species contain a potent neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin (TTX), primarily in their internal organs, skin, and sometimes muscles. This toxin is highly poisonous and can be lethal to humans if ingested.

Despite the danger, certain species of pufferfish are considered a delicacy in some cuisines, most notably in Japan as fugu. The preparation of fugu is a highly regulated and skilled culinary art, requiring licensed chefs to remove the toxic organs meticulously to ensure the dish is safe for consumption. Even with expert preparation, a small amount of toxin can remain, and consuming fugu carries inherent risks. The bright colors and unique patterns of many pufferfish species also make them popular in the aquarium trade, though their specific needs and potential toxicity require careful consideration by hobbyists.
