Pszichrométereket, commonly known as psychrometers, are instruments used to measure relative humidity. They consist of two thermometers, a dry-bulb thermometer and a wet-bulb thermometer, mounted side-by-side. The dry-bulb thermometer measures the ambient air temperature, while the wet-bulb thermometer has its bulb covered with a wet wick or cloth.

The difference in temperature between the two thermometers is directly related to the humidity of the air. As water evaporates from the wet wick, it cools the wet-bulb thermometer. The rate of evaporation, and thus the cooling effect, depends on how much moisture is already present in the air. If the air is very dry, evaporation will be rapid, leading to a significant temperature difference. If the air is already saturated with moisture, evaporation will be slow, and the temperatures of both thermometers will be very close.

By observing the readings on both thermometers, one can determine the relative humidity using a psychrometric chart or a set of psychrometric tables. These charts and tables correlate the dry-bulb temperature, the wet-bulb temperature, and the difference between them to provide a value for relative humidity. Pszichrométereket are widely used in meteorology, agriculture, industrial processes, and environmental monitoring where accurate humidity measurements are crucial. They are relatively simple, inexpensive, and reliable instruments for determining atmospheric moisture content.
