Przesadzenie (transplanting) is the horticultural practice of moving a plant to a new container or location, typically to improve growth, health, or appearance. In container gardening it involves transferring a plant from a pot that is too small or from one soil mix to another, usually into a larger pot. In garden settings it refers to relocating seedlings or established plants to a new bed, or to a deeper or more suitable site.

Indications for przesadzenie include root-bound roots, stagnant growth, yellowing leaves, degraded soil structure, or the presence of pests or disease in the current growing medium. It is also done to refresh nutrients, improve drainage, or accommodate plant growth. The need to move a plant after purchase or after seasonal changes is another common reason.

Timing is important. Most plants are best moved during the active growing season, typically spring for temperate climates. Houseplants are commonly repotted in spring or early summer. Avoid transplanting during periods of extreme heat, drought, or cold; for some woody perennials, fall or early spring may be more suitable depending on climate.

Procedure overview. Choose a pot with adequate drainage and a fresh soil mix appropriate for the plant. Water the plant beforehand to ease removal. Gently lift the plant, trim any damaged or circling roots, and place it in the new pot at the correct depth. Fill with soil, firm gently, and water to settle the medium. For outdoor or bed transplants, dig a hole, water the hole, place the plant at the correct depth, backfill, and firm the soil around it.

Aftercare and risks. Keep the plant in appropriate light and moisture conditions, avoid fertilizing immediately after transplant, and monitor for signs of transplant shock or pests. Proper technique minimizes stress and supports recovery and continued growth.
