proturids

Proturids are a small order of wingless, soil-dwelling insects belonging to the class Entognatha. They are characterized by their elongated bodies, with a length typically ranging from 1 to 5 millimeters. Proturids possess a unique combination of primitive and derived traits, making them of considerable interest to evolutionary biologists. Their mouthparts are entognathous, meaning they are retracted within the head capsule, a feature shared with their close relatives, the collembolans and proturans.

These tiny creatures are found globally, inhabiting the upper layers of soil, leaf litter, and mosses. They are detritivores, feeding on decaying organic matter, fungi, and algae. Proturids have a relatively simple life cycle, with young individuals resembling smaller versions of adults. They undergo a series of molts to reach maturity. Due to their cryptic lifestyle and small size, proturids are rarely encountered by humans and their biology and ecological roles are not as well-studied as many other insect groups.
