In a typical offset printing process, paper passes through multiple printing units, each applying one of the CMYK inks. The human eye then blends these dots from a distance, creating the illusion of a full-color image. This technique is fundamental to modern commercial printing, allowing for the reproduction of photographs, graphics, and text in full color at a relatively low cost.

The effectiveness of process colors depends on the quality of the inks, the precision of the printing equipment, and the calibration of the color separation process. Color separation is the digital manipulation that breaks down an original image into the individual CMYK components. Accurate separation ensures that the correct proportions of each process color are used to recreate the original colors faithfully. This approach is distinct from spot colors, which use pre-mixed, single-hue inks for specific colors.
