Protostage is a term used to denote an early or precursor stage in the development of a system, organism, or object. It is not a standardized term and its meaning varies by discipline. In general, protostage refers to a transitional period before the mature configuration or final form is reached.

In astronomy, protostage commonly refers to the early phase of star formation when a collapsing molecular cloud core develops into a protostar. During this stage, material accretes onto the central object, an envelope and disk surround it, and bipolar outflows may arise. The protostellar phase is often divided into sub-stages, and lasts roughly tens of thousands to a few hundred thousand years depending on mass and environment.

In biology and related fields, the term is less standard. When used, protostage can denote an early post-fertilization interval before the organism reaches recognizable embryonic structures, or more generally a pre-differentiation period. Because embryology typically uses established terms such as zygote, morula, blastula, and gastrula, protostage tends to be informal or historical in usage.

Outside science, the term may appear as an informal equivalent of “proto-stage” or “protoype” in product development and other processes to describe an initial or experimental version before refinement.
