A protoninsiirtäjä, often translated as proton donor, is a chemical species that donates a proton (H+) to another chemical species. This process is fundamental to acid-base chemistry. In the Brønsted-Lowry theory of acids and bases, an acid is defined as a proton donor. Conversely, a base is a proton acceptor. When a protoninsiirtäjä reacts, it loses a proton and typically becomes its conjugate base.
