Prostatiitti is the medical term for inflammation of the prostate gland. The prostate is a small gland found in men, located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It produces some of the fluid that makes up semen. Prostatiitti can affect men of all ages, but it is most common in men younger than 50.

There are several types of prostatiitti. Acute bacterial prostatiitti is a sudden, severe infection caused by bacteria. Chronic bacterial prostatiitti is a recurring infection that can be harder to treat. Nonbacterial prostatiitti, also known as chronic pelvic pain syndrome, is the most common type and its cause is often unclear. It does not involve a bacterial infection. Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatiitti is inflammation of the prostate that causes no symptoms and is often found incidentally during tests for other conditions.

Symptoms of prostatiitti can vary depending on the type but may include pain in the pelvic area, lower back, or genitals, difficulty urinating, a frequent urge to urinate, pain during urination or ejaculation, and sometimes flu-like symptoms with acute bacterial prostatiitti.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination including a digital rectal exam, urine tests to check for infection, and sometimes blood tests or imaging. Treatment depends on the cause and may include antibiotics for bacterial infections, anti-inflammatory medications, alpha-blockers to relax the bladder neck and prostate, and lifestyle changes. In chronic pelvic pain syndrome, a combination of therapies is often used.
