Propaanbutaan, commonly referred to as LPG, is a liquefied petroleum gas mixture used as fuel for heating, cooking and transportation. It is mainly composed of propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10). The exact ratio varies by season and supplier; propane-rich blends are preferred in colder climates because propane vaporizes at lower temperatures, while butane-rich blends are common in milder conditions.

LPG is stored as a liquid under pressure in cylinders or tanks. When released, it rapidly vaporizes into a flammable gas. The mixture is colorless and is typically odorized with an odorant such as ethyl mercaptan to aid leak detection. It is denser than air, so leaks may collect in low-lying areas.

Applications include domestic cooking and space or water heating, portable heating, and barbecue cylinders. It is also used as a vehicle fuel (autogas) in many countries and for various industrial processes.

Storage and safety considerations are important with LPG. It is highly flammable and must be handled with approved regulators, hoses and cylinders. Store upright in a well-ventilated area away from heat sources and ignition risk. Ensure proper ventilation, regular leak checks, and adherence to local regulations; never use open flames or electrical devices that could ignite in enclosed spaces.
