The word derives from promýt, meaning to rinse through, with a prefix that emphasizes thoroughness or forward action.

In geology and archaeology, promýlení refers to washing a sample through screens or with water to remove fines and concentrate coarser fractions. It is used in grain-size analysis, sedimentology, and artifact recovery to expose features or components that would be obscured by soil or sediment.

In environmental engineering and hydrology, promýlení describes flushing a system—such as a pipe, trench, or aquifer—to clear sediment, debris, or contaminants.
